Eruption of Mount Etna in Italy Prompts Evacuations and Flight Cancellations

Mount Etna, one of Europe's most active volcanoes located on the island of Sicily, erupted violently on June 2, 2025. The eruption involved the release of large amounts of ash, gases, and volcanic rocks, with ash clouds reaching several kilometers into the sky. The eruption caused part of the volcano's crater to collapse, resulting in significant ash and debris being expelled. Authorities reported that the activity shifted towards lava flows, with ash dispersing mainly southwestward. The eruption was so intense that the volcanic ash reached heights of over 6.5 kilometers, prompting a red alert from Italian aviation authorities. Despite the severity, nearby airports in Catania and Palermo remained operational, although flights were advised to avoid ash clouds. Emergency services closed access roads to prevent tourists and residents from approaching the volcano, ensuring safety and allowing monitoring of the situation. Mount Etna, standing at 3,323 meters, is known for frequent eruptions but rarely causes major damage, attracting over 1.5 million tourists annually. The recent eruption, the most violent since 2017, was visible from multiple cities on the island and caused widespread concern among residents and travelers.
