GSCNTC Crackdown on Fake Mobile Phones Supporting 5G in Thailand

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) of Thailand has conducted a major crackdown on nearly 10,000 illegal mobile devices, including smartphones and tablets, that falsely claim to support 5G technology. The operation, carried out on May 30, 2025, in Samut Prakan province, involved joint efforts with consumer protection agencies, cyber police, customs, and excise authorities. Authorities seized 9,540 devices valued at approximately 33 million baht, which did not meet technical standards and used falsified import documents. These devices were primarily sold online without physical storefronts, and some were returned by customers due to faults. The NBTC emphasized the importance of verifying product standards before purchase, especially from online sources, to avoid misleading claims such as unsupported 5G functionality. The agency warned that selling devices without proper certification could disrupt mobile networks and violate laws on radio communications. Consumers are encouraged to report non-compliant products via the Consumer Protection Board hotline 1166. The NBTC also announced plans to intensify inspections of technical certifications and counterfeit stickers on IT products to prevent illegal imports and sales.
