Becerra Proposes Mileage Tax to Fund Roads

200

California gubernatorial hopeful Xavier Becerra supports a controversial mileage-based tax to repair crumbling state roads. Speaking during an interview, the former attorney general stated that "everything should be on the table" regarding funding options. He acknowledged his reluctance to increase taxes unnecessarily but affirmed support for taxing electric vehicle drivers alongside traditional gas users. The proposal involves motorists paying between 6 and 9 cents per mile driven in addition to existing fees. Under this plan, a driver traveling 15,000 miles annually would face an additional cost of $900 yearly. Meanwhile, Republican candidate Steve Hilton addressed homelessness by proposing the construction of recovery centers offering mental health treatment, addiction support, and job training.
