NYC Launches Free Child Care for Two-Year-Olds & Expands Universal Pre-K Amid Statewide Investments
Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul announced a comprehensive plan to expand child care access in New York City and across the state. The initiative includes launching free child care for two-year-olds in NYC, strengthening the existing 3K program towards universal access, and investing in early childhood education. Governor Hochul committed to delivering affordable, high-quality child care for nearly 100,000 additional children through a $8 billion investment in the state's child care infrastructure, aiming for universal care by 2028-29. The plan also involves expanding Pre-K access statewide, increasing funding for existing programs, and supporting counties with new pilot projects for full-day, year-round care. Additionally, the state will launch an Office of Child Care and Early Education to oversee implementation and support workforce development through scholarships and grants. The initiative emphasizes reducing costs for families, increasing subsidies, and ensuring high standards for early childhood education. Mayor Mamdani participated in a community event singing with Ms. Rachel, a popular YouTube educator, to promote early childhood development. The combined efforts aim to make child care more affordable and accessible, ensuring every child is prepared for kindergarten and supporting working families.
