Univision Returns to YouTube TV After Two-Month Dispute

Univision, including flagship KMEX in Los Angeles, has resumed broadcasting on YouTube TV after a two-month blackout caused by a dispute over pricing and carriage fees. The new multiyear agreement between TelevisaUnivision and Google restores Univision, UniMás, Galavisión, and TUDN sports channels to YouTube TV’s base plan, which is available to over 10 million subscribers. The deal also includes the availability of Univision’s streaming service Vix on YouTube’s Primetime Channels hub and expands ViX’s access in the U.S. and Mexico, beginning in 2026. The blackout, which lasted 56 days, was the longest in YouTube TV’s history and stemmed from negotiations over a proposed 18% fee increase for Spanish-language channels, which drew legislative concerns about affordability for Spanish-speaking viewers. The dispute reflects ongoing tensions in streaming services over rising programming costs, which have led to multiple blackouts involving major networks like Disney, NBCUniversal, and Paramount. TelevisaUnivision’s CEO Daniel Alegre expressed satisfaction with the agreement, emphasizing its importance for Hispanic audiences who rely on their content for news, sports, and entertainment. YouTube TV, which launched in 2017, has faced increasing costs as it negotiates deals with major content providers, causing the monthly subscription price to more than double to $82.99. The resolution of this dispute highlights the ongoing challenges in balancing content costs with consumer affordability in the streaming industry.
