Los Rios College District to Close Bookstores at Two Campuses and Shift to Online Sales

Starting July 1, 2026, the Los Rios Community College District will close its bookstores at Cosumnes River College and Folsom Lake College due to declining sales and the rise of online educational resources. The districts' other two campuses, American River College and Sacramento City College, will maintain their physical bookstores, which will serve as the main retail outlets for students across all campuses, with online ordering options available. The closures are driven by increased student use of free online resources, including Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) materials, which have significantly reduced the need for physical textbooks. Cosumnes River College's bookstore, known as the 'Hawks Nest,' is one of the lowest-performing in the district and has seen a decline in revenue because of the shift to digital resources, with 75% of course sections adopting ZTC materials. The college plans to repurpose the space previously occupied by the bookstore into areas supporting student wellness and organizations. Similarly, Folsom Lake College will close its bookstore, with discussions ongoing about how to best utilize the space for student benefit. District officials emphasize that online resources are cost-saving for students, with over $13 million saved over three years, but some students express concerns about access to physical materials and the loss of convenient campus amenities like snacks and merchandise. The district is exploring options to provide small campus conveniences and resources in new formats, including pop-up sales and online orders, to support student needs.
