The recall involves over 1,300 cases sold in Texas, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. The bacteria is resistant to common preservatives and can lead to infections such as respiratory issues, urinary tract infections, eye infections, and sepsis, especially in vulnerable populations. The FDA classified the risk as Class II, indicating a moderate health risk. Consumers are advised to stop using the affected wipes and dispose of them. The product in question was a 50-count pack with lot number 1835U6325A. As an alternative, several other makeup wipes are recommended, including Cetaphil Gentle Makeup Removing Face Wipes, Clean Skin Club XL Premium Face Wipes, Aveeno Calm + Restore Unscented Makeup Remover Wipes, Burt’s Bees Micellar Rose Water Towelettes, and CeraVe Makeup Remover Wipes. These options are suitable for sensitive skin, fragrance-free, and contain soothing ingredients. The bacteria Pluralibacter gergoviae is opportunistic, resistant to preservatives, and multi-drug resistant, making it difficult to kill and a concern in cosmetic products. While the risk of serious health effects is low for healthy individuals, those with weakened immune systems should be cautious.
