Alaska High School Football: SWDP's Undefeated First Season and State Championship Victory

The Student Wrestling Development Program (SWDP) in Alaska achieved a historic milestone by winning its first state championship in 9-man football, capping off an undefeated inaugural season with a 40-18 victory over Seward in the Denali championship game held in Wasilla. The team, known as the Archangels, started its football program just this year after establishing a strong wrestling tradition, including winning a Division I state wrestling title in 2024. Head Coach Heath Martin, who has a background in high school football, credited the team’s success to their physicality, brotherhood, and adaptability, despite most players having little to no prior football experience. The team’s standout players included quarterback Mana Lauaki-Hart, whose 82-yard run in the championship game shifted momentum, and senior leaders such as tight end/defensive end Gage Runnels and running back Louie Poland. The program was initiated by Wes Bockert, who aimed to expand the school's athletic culture beyond wrestling. The success of SWDP demonstrates the potential for growth of 9-man football in Alaska, especially for smaller schools and communities, and highlights the transfer of wrestling skills to football, emphasizing mental toughness and physical readiness.
