Former Eastern Michigan Basketball Players Refuse to Cooperate in Sports Betting Investigation

Three former Eastern Michigan men's basketball players—Jalin Billingsley, Da'Sean Nelson, and Jalen Terry—refused to cooperate with an NCAA investigation into potential sports betting violations during the 2024-25 season. The NCAA announced that the players, who are no longer with the program, declined interviews and requested that their phones, imaged on January 29 as part of the investigation, be destroyed. Their lack of cooperation prevented the NCAA from determining whether betting infractions occurred. The investigation was triggered by suspicious betting activity observed by sportsbooks during three games last season, notably the Jan. 14 game against Central Michigan, where sportsbooks detected unusual first-half betting interest. The players were among the top scorers for Eastern Michigan, with Terry averaging 16.6 points per game and Nelson 16.1. Both had previously played at DePaul before transferring. The NCAA is investigating 13 athletes across six schools for gambling violations, and the Eastern Michigan case is part of a broader probe involving multiple institutions. The NCAA emphasizes that refusal to cooperate violates NCAA rules and can lead to sanctions, although these players had no remaining eligibility. The NCAA has not yet assessed penalties but warns that non-cooperation can result in prohibitions on athletic activities and public infractions.
