American Cruise Lines Cancels Cleveland Stops for 2026 Great Lakes Cruises, Shifts to Buffalo
American Cruise Lines will not be launching its 2026 Great Lakes itineraries from Cleveland, Ohio, and will instead start from Buffalo, New York. The company cited the inability to find a suitable docking location in Cleveland that meets operational needs. Toledo will remain the only Ohio port for the cruises. The cancellation of Cleveland stops was disappointing for local officials, including David Gutheil, COO of the Port of Cleveland, who expressed hope for future collaborations. American Cruise Lines, known for river cruises across the U.S., planned to be the first to operate exclusively U.S.-port cruises in the Great Lakes, starting and ending in Cleveland, which was expected to bring economic benefits through increased tourism and overnight stays. The company’s new 130-passenger ship, American Patriot, was to be used for these cruises. Despite the cancellation, Cleveland expects to break cruise records in 2026, having just concluded a record season with 53 port calls and approximately 8,700 passengers, generating around $1.3 million in direct spending. The decision to shift the start point to Buffalo impacts itineraries, including a 14-day route between Cleveland and Milwaukee and a nine-day route between Cleveland and Syracuse, New York.
