Tony Reno, the former Joel E. Smilow '54 Head Coach of Yale Football, has died at age 52 following a battle with a neurodegenerative disease that he had been managing since August 2025. According to reports from New Haven, Conn., and statements from Yale Athletics Director Victoria M. "Vicky" Chun, Reno resigned for health reasons in February but continued coaching every game during his final season despite these challenges. During his fourteen-year tenure starting in January 2012, he guided the Bulldogs to five Ivy League championships, including titles in 2017, 2019, 2022, 2023, and a recent victory in 2025 that propelled them into the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision playoffs. Reno amassed an impressive 83 career victories, ranking as the second-most by any head coach in Yale's storied history behind Carm Cozza. He was known for his humility, authenticity, and unwavering commitment to student-athletes, building a program defined not only by on-field success but also by excellence in the classroom and community. While his son Dante serves as the starting quarterback today, Reno leaves behind his wife Toni and three children: Dante, Angelina, and Vince. The university expressed deep sadness over his passing, noting that it was the relationships he built and lives he changed that will define his enduring legacy rather than just his remarkable accomplishments on the field.
