Cold Weather Threatens Florida with Possible Snow and Record Low Temperatures

A significant Arctic outbreak is bringing dangerously cold temperatures and hazardous winter conditions to Florida and the Gulf Coast this weekend. An Extreme Cold Warning has been issued for the region, with wind chills forecasted to reach into the teens and even single digits in some areas. Wind advisories are in effect from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, with northwest winds expected to gust up to 40-45 mph, making the actual temperatures feel even colder. High temperatures are expected to range from the low 30s inland to the upper 30s along the coast, with wind chills during the day possibly only in the upper teens to lower 20s. In particular, Tampa and surrounding areas might experience brief, light snow flurries this weekend due to cold air moving over warmer Gulf waters, which could generate Gulf-effect clouds and light showers offshore. However, the likelihood of significant snowfall remains low, with only a 10-20% chance of flurries mainly near the coast. The last measurable snow in Tampa was on January 19, 1977, with 0.2 inches recorded. The most recent flurries occurred on January 9, 2010, but did not accumulate. Beyond Florida, winter storms have transformed Niagara Falls into a frozen spectacle, attracting tourists despite heavy snow and extreme cold. Over 200,000 people are still without power due to Winter Storm Fern, which has also caused widespread disruptions. The storm's cold outbreak is expected to gradually ease early next week, with temperatures rising into the 60s. Overall, this cold snap is notable for its intensity and potential impact, including the possibility of brief snow in Tampa and record low temperatures across the Gulf Coast.
