UK rap pioneer Sway dies aged 44 after health battle

British rapper Sway has died at age 44 following a struggle with health issues, according to reports from close friends and industry colleagues. Born Derek Safo in Hornsey, north London, he is best known for his debut album This Is My Demo and the Top 10 hit Level Up.

Sway made history as the first unsigned artist to win a MOBO Award for Best Hip Hop Act in 2005. His critically acclaimed demo was also nominated for a Mercury Prize in 2006, beating major acts like 50 Cent and The Game. He collaborated with Ed Sheeran on No 5 Collaborations Project and helped develop the career of KSI.

In addition to his music success, Sway appeared as Ross Rosten in Top Boy's first episode and had minor roles in films including The Grind. Born to Ghanaian parents, he described himself as versatile across genres but noted he never felt at home with UK garage or hiplife due to language barriers.

He leaves behind two sons and four daughters. A friend who recently shared health struggles with him confirmed the news on Instagram, stating that Sway passed away at his home in Ghana while keeping spirits up for their children.
