Sway DaSafo Dies at 44 After Struggling with Hodgkin Lymphoma

British-Ghanaian rapper Sway DaSafo has died aged 44 following a battle with Hodgkin lymphoma. The award-winning artist, who was born Derek Andrew Safo in London to Ghanaian parents, passed away at his home in Ghana while receiving treatment for the cancer diagnosed in 2010. No official cause of death has been announced by authorities or family members.

Sway gained international recognition as a pioneer of grime and hip-hop culture, known for his witty storytelling and independence from major record labels. He became the first unsigned artist to win Best Hip-Hop Act at the 2005 Mobo Awards, defeating established American artists like 50 Cent and The Game that year.

His debut album This Is My Demo included a Top 40 hit titled Little Derek in 2012. Throughout his career, Sway emphasized positivity in his music, stating he would not rap about violence or holding guns to people's heads despite the industry trends of his time.
