SNAP Benefits Adjusted Oct. 1; Funding Model Shifts Responsibility

1K

Major changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program began on October 1, affecting millions of Americans through both immediate benefit adjustments and long-term funding restructuring. While monthly payments for eligible households received a short-term inflation boost—rising from $298 to $306 for single-person households in most states—the program's underlying financial model is fundamentally altering state responsibilities. Under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, federal support will shrink by half over five years, requiring states to cover 75% of administrative costs such as worker salaries and training. This shift places a significant fiscal burden on state budgets, with estimates suggesting California could face expenses between $3 million and $670 million annually if it does not lower its error rates below the new 6% threshold starting in October 2027. Additionally, stricter eligibility rules have already resulted in an estimated five million Americans losing benefits over the past year, including more than one million children.
