Suresh faces Kwon in India's Davis Cup Final 8 push

India will open its bid for a historic Davis Cup Final 8 berth with Dhakshineswar Suresh facing South Korea No. 1 Soonwoo Kwon on Friday at the Olympic Tennis Centre in Seoul.

The two top singles players have endured different journeys but arrived at this crossroads packed with experience while trying to climb back up their rankings after falling in the pecking order.

Dhakshineswar's ability to handle Seoul's slow, low-bouncing surface will be tested against Kwon, who is ranked 150 and the only South Korean man to have won two ATP Tour titles. The 26-year-old Dhakshineswar was the star of India's dramatic 3-2 victory over the Netherlands in February.

Kwon has won three Challengers this season after completing his mandatory military service in July, having previously reached a career-high ranking of 52 in 2021. He also won both singles matches in Korea's 3-2 comeback against Argentina in the previous round.

For Dhakshineswar, the task is to produce his best tennis when stakes are highest on conditions that do not naturally favor his attacking game. The second singles match will pit India's No. 1 Sumit Nagal against Hyeon Chung, a former world No. 19 and first Korean man to reach a Grand Slam semifinal.

The winner of the tie will progress to the Davis Cup Final 8 scheduled in Bologna, Italy, in November.
