Archaeologists Confirm World's Oldest Shipwreck at Kekova Island

2K

Researchers off Turkey's coast have identified the world's oldest known shipwreck, dating it to between 4,400 and 4,700 years ago during the Early Bronze Age. The site lies approximately 100 feet underwater near Kekova Island in Antalya, featuring scattered stone anchors and over 30 ceramic amphorae that still hold traces of their original cargo such as olive oil wine or dairy products. Because the wooden hull has completely disintegrated scientists relied on pottery styles matching those found at ancient Egyptian pyramid sites to confirm its age rather than using radiocarbon dating methods.
