RTÉ Investigation Reveals Distressing Conditions and Abuse in Irish Nursing Homes

An RTÉ investigation has uncovered severe care failings and neglect in two private nursing homes operated by Ireland’s largest provider, Emeis Ireland, formerly known as Orpea. The documentary, 'Inside Ireland’s Nursing Homes,' features undercover footage that reveals distressing and, in some cases, abusive practices, including residents being left sitting on toilets for extended periods, refused assistance, and improperly handled. Staff shortages were widespread, with at times one worker responsible for up to 23 residents, and essential supplies like incontinence pads and hygiene products were often unavailable. Residents with mobility and care needs were frequently moved without proper equipment, and some were left in urine-soaked clothing or inappropriately handled, violating care protocols. The investigation also highlighted systemic issues such as inadequate staffing, poor manual handling practices, and neglect of residents’ dignity and rights. The findings have prompted responses from authorities, with the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) reviewing compliance plans, and the company issuing apologies and promising comprehensive reforms. The Taoiseach expressed shock and concern over the revelations, emphasizing the need for better care standards and oversight in nursing homes.
