Crocodile River Approved as Brisbane 2032 Olympic Venue

200

The Fitzroy River in Rockhampton, Queensland, has been officially approved to host rowing and canoe events at the 2032 Brisbane Olympics after passing an independent technical assessment. The course is home to approximately 500 saltwater crocodiles, a factor that was not included in the safety evaluation which instead focused on weather patterns, water levels, and flood risks. Despite concerns raised by athletes like gold medallist Drew Ginn regarding potential jeopardy for competitors, World Rowing and Paddle Worldwide endorsed the venue as capable of providing fair competition conditions. The state government confirmed the decision following months of debate over the site's suitability.
