24-Year-Old Marathon Runner Dies Near Finish Line

Rachel Apa, a 24-year-old former field hockey player and Parkinson's Champions participant, collapsed in Central Park during the New York City marathon two miles from completion. Despite her father describing her as being in perfect health just days prior, she sent distress messages to him before stopping completely at mile 19. Spectators administered CPR until emergency services arrived, transporting her to Mount Sinai Hospital where she died at 9:40 p.m. due to rhabdomyolysis.
