Pentagon Cyber Command Investigates US Military Freezer Malfunctions
Hackers are believed to have tampered with refrigeration systems at military bases across the U.S., spoiling food in commissaries. At least six on-base stores had their freezer temperatures raised, melting frozen goods and causing outages that affected produce as well. The Fort Huachuca facility reported its freezers entering defrost mode overnight, leaving no frozen items for sale until further notice.
These incidents resemble a similar cyberattack targeting French supermarkets in October, where refrigeration units were also heated to dangerous levels by malicious actors. While investigators have not yet identified the perpetrators, U.S. Department of Defense officials confirmed that Cyber Command is coordinating with interagency partners and French authorities to determine the cause. Experts suggest hackers exploited weaknesses in internet-connected temperature controls.
U.S. military investigators are currently working closely with European counterparts to understand how these systems were compromised.
