Canadian Swimmer Penny Oleksiak Banned Until 2027 for Weighabouts Failures
Penny Oleksiak, Canada's most decorated female Olympian, has been banned from competition until July 14, 2027, after accepting a two-year penalty for three whereabouts failures. The ban is retroactive to July 15, 2023, and any results from June 16 onward will be disqualified, including medals and prizes. The whereabouts system, part of WADA's anti-doping program, requires athletes to provide a daily 60-minute availability window 90 days in advance for testing. Oleksiak’s issues stem from missing or submitting inaccurate whereabouts information, which she described as an administrative mistake. Despite withdrawing from recent competitions due to these issues, she maintains she is a clean athlete. A total of three filing failures or missed tests within a 12-month period can lead to a two-year ban. Oleksiak has won seven Olympic medals and nine world championship medals.
