Three Solar Eruptions Boost Northern Lights Across US This Weekend

1K

Multiple coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are heading toward Earth, potentially enhancing aurora visibility across northern North America from October 9 through the weekend. Three solar eruptions originated from sunspot region AR4549 on October 6 and 7, with the most significant CME expected to arrive on October 9 alongside a second glancing blow around the same time. A third eruption erupted on October 8 and may reach Earth between October 10 and 11. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center forecasts G2 (Moderate) geomagnetic storm conditions for October 9, during which auroras have previously been observed as far south as New York and Idaho. While northern U.S. states currently offer the best prospects, uncertainty remains regarding how these incoming eruptions will interact with Earth's magnetic field to determine the exact southern limit of visibility.
