NFL Overtime Rules Remain Unchanged For 2026 Season

The NFL will implement familiar overtime rules for the 2026 season, mirroring those used in 2025 and since the postseason began in 2022. The extra period lasts ten minutes, with each team allowed two timeouts and all video reviews initiated by officials at the booth. Both teams receive possession opportunities to score; however, if a kicking team scores a safety during the receiving team's first possession, that team does not get another turn. A coin toss decides who starts play. After both sides have scored, the team with more points wins immediately. If one possession each leaves the score tied, the next scoring team advances toward victory. Should ten minutes expire without a winner, the game ends in a tie. Only one regular-season NFL game has ended this way during 2026: Week 4 between the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys at Sunday Night Football.
