Boeing Secures $20B Navy Contract to Replace F-18

The U.S. Department of War announced Tuesday that Boeing has secured a contract worth more than $20 billion for full-scale development of the F/A-XX, a sixth-generation strike fighter intended to expand carrier reach and eventually replace parts of the service's fleet.

This agreement marks Boeing's second selection for a sixth-generation program after winning the Air Force's F-47 in 2025. Under Secretary Michael P. Duffey described the aircraft as critical for maintaining peace through strength, noting it will dominate contested airspace and provide decisive combat advantage.

The Navy contract covers multiple test aircraft for ground testing, airworthiness evaluations, and systems integration. Boeing President Steve Parker confirmed the company's readiness to build concurrent future combat aircraft programs following its initial selection in 2018. The award beat out Northrop Grumman Corp., which was also vying for the role of producing America's next stealthy fighter jet.
