Michael Sweetney, Former Georgetown Star and NBA Draft Pick Dies at 43

Former Georgetown standout Michael Sweetney has died at age 43 following his two-season stints with the New York Knicks and Chicago Bulls. His wife India announced the news on Thursday via Facebook, describing him as a devoted father of three children who was deeply loved by family and friends alike. No official cause of death has been released.

Sweetney played three seasons at Georgetown from 2000 to 2003 before being selected ninth overall in the 2003 NBA Draft. During his college career, he averaged 18.2 points and 9.2 rebounds per game as a finalist for both the Naismith College Player of the Year award and the John Wooden Award.

After averaging 6.5 points and 4.5 rebounds over two seasons in New York before being traded to Chicago where he played another two years, Sweetney continued his basketball career overseas until retiring in 2017. He later transitioned into coaching as an assistant for Yeshiva University's men's team.

Sweetney was also a vocal advocate regarding mental health, having publicly discussed struggles with grief and depression during the early part of his NBA journey.
