Matthew Lillard Expresses Shame Over Scream 7 Role Following Melissa Barrera Firing

Actor Matthew Lillard admitted feeling ashamed after reprising his role in the seventh installment of 'Scream,' citing the recent firing of co-star Melissa Barrera. Barrera was removed from the franchise following social media posts criticizing Israel amid the conflict in Gaza, which producer Spyglass Media classified as hate speech under their zero-tolerance policy. Lillard acknowledged that he did not speak out against her removal at the time because he had been excited to return for his role as Stu Macher.

During a recent 30th-anniversary screening of the original film in Austin, Texas, Lillard discussed the difficulty public figures face when speaking on political issues. He emphasized that while it is not easy always to speak out—citing his own past decision to say 'fuck ICE' at a previous screening—he believes supporting queer and trans communities is essential for him as he has children.

Lillard stated, "I blew that," regarding the situation with Barrera. He described her firing as "really fucking bullshit" and noted she was on the right side of history while the world remained silent about her treatment. Although Lillard expressed regret over his initial silence, confirmed reports indicate he will still appear in 'Scream 7,' which became the highest-grossing entry in the franchise with $214 million.
