The recent New York City Marathon was marred by two separate tragedies. Katie Suárez, a 28-year-old resident of Brooklyn, was stabbed in the neck while training for the race; she died after struggling until her body could no longer withstand the assault. Her attacker has offered a reward to anyone with information.
Separately, Rachel Apa, a 24-year-old from Pennsylvania who had completed significant distance before collapsing at mile 24, also lost her life during the event. According to her father, Steve Apa, she suffered rhabdomyolysis caused by extreme physical exertion and dehydration, which led to kidney failure. She died two miles short of finishing the race while running for her late grandfather.
