Letitia Plummer Wins Historic Harris County Judge Race

1K

Former Houston councilwoman Letitia Plummer declared victory in the race for Harris County judge on Tuesday night after defeating Republican challenger Orlando Sanchez with early unofficial results showing her leading by a significant margin. As of late Tuesday, Plummer held approximately 62% of the vote compared to Sanchez's 38%, and she became the first African American elected as Harris County judge. Following these initial counts, Sanchez conceded the election shortly after 9 p.m., stating he respected the voters' decision despite it not being his hoped-for outcome. A dentist by trade who previously ran for Congress in 2018 before serving on Houston City Council since 2019, Plummer resigned from her city council seat earlier this year to pursue the county judge position currently held by Democratic Judge Lina Hidalgo. She will lead Harris County Commissioners Court, a five-member body responsible for overseeing road infrastructure projects, setting property taxes, and making funding decisions regarding flood control initiatives among other services. During her campaign alongside Sanchez on issues like public safety and government spending, Plummer advocated for building stronger unity between the court's Democratic and Republican members.
