Mali Suspends French TV Channels TF1 and LCI Over Unverified Claims on Jihadists and Fuel Blockade

The military-led government in Mali has suspended the French television channels TF1 and LCI until further notice, accusing them of broadcasting unverified claims and false information regarding jihadists and the fuel blockade imposed by the group Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), linked to al-Qaeda. The Mali High Authority of Communication cited a specific 12-minute segment from the program 'Grand Dossier' aired on November 9, which was also posted online by TF1, as the basis for the suspension. The segment contained allegations that the junta had banned fuel sales, that regions like Kayes and Nioro were under complete blockade, and that terrorists were close to capturing Bamako, the capital. The regulator condemned these claims as violations of journalistic ethics and warned that they could incite panic and undermine social cohesion. Since September, JNIM has enforced a fuel blockade, leading to shortages, long queues at gas stations, and worsening security conditions. Several Western embassies, including the US and France, have advised their citizens to leave Mali. The country is under military rule following recent coups, with ongoing regional instability and increased attacks by militants and security forces, contributing to a deteriorating security situation in the Sahel region.
