Rachel Maddow Documentary 'Kill Bury Print' Wins Truth Award

Producer Rachel Maddow and director Ben Klein received the 2026 David Carr Award for Truth in Non-Fiction Filmmaking from the Montclair Film Festival. The jury honored their true-crime documentary, Kill. Bury. Print., which chronicles a standoff between McCurtain County's family-run newspaper and local sheriff officials following secret recordings of alleged misconduct.

The film centers on allegations involving sex, drugs, violence, and an alleged murder plot within the law enforcement department in Oklahoma. Maddow noted that her initial news report covered seven minutes of this brazen story despite limited airtime per week. The documentary is described as comparable to All The President's Men meets No Country for Old Men.

The Montclair Film Festival annually recognizes films honoring the legacy and journalistic commitment of David Carr, a former New York Times reporter who lived in Montclair, New Jersey. Director Ben Klein stated that their production features bulldog journalists and feels like a tribute to Carr's spirit. The documentary will screen during next month's festival at the Wellmont Theater on October 17.
