Ken Burns' 'The American Revolution' Screenings and Events in Yorktown

Yorktown, Virginia, is hosting several events related to acclaimed documentary filmmaker Ken Burns and his upcoming series 'The American Revolution.' On September 20, a special screening of a 56-minute preview of the six-part PBS series will take place at Yorktown Battlefield, coinciding with the 'We the People' event. The event features a Revolutionary Festival with live music, historical reenactments, food trucks, artillery demonstrations, and interactive activities, culminating in the screening at 7 p.m. Attendees are advised to park at designated lots and use the Yorktown Trolley, with some parking reserved for disabled visitors. The event is free but requires registration, and visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and weather gear. The series, which explores the founding of the United States, its sacrifices, and citizenship responsibilities, took ten years to produce and incorporates historical artifacts, artwork, CGI, and drone footage due to the lack of photographic material from the colonial era. The film will officially premiere on PBS on November 16, and additional screenings are planned at Mount Vernon and Baltimore. Virginia native David Schmidt, who co-directed the film with Burns, will introduce the Yorktown screening. Schmidt emphasized the importance of truth in storytelling, a message echoed by Burns during the event. The series aims to educate and inspire discussion about American history, with Yorktown playing a significant role as the site where the Revolutionary War ended. The event also highlights the region's historical significance, including battles and strategic use of the Chesapeake Bay during the war.
