Keanu Reeves Stars in Revived Netflix Action Movie Maelstrom

Netflix is producing 'Maelstrom,' an action film revived from a script originally sold to Warner Bros. as a spec project in 1993, with Keanu Reeves attached to star after Alan Ritchson dropped out of the role. The movie will be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and produced by Jeff Robinov.

The story follows a Federal Marshall protecting an arms dealer's fiancée who is preparing to testify against him as she faces threats from her husband, all while surviving a hurricane that cuts off communication. Screenwriter Mark Bianculli has revised the original draft written by Gregory Fitzpatrick in 1993.

Collet-Serra previously directed 'Carry-On,' another Netflix revival of an old title. Robinov sold the script decades ago during a period when studios attempted to stockpile action scripts for potential use.
