JetBlue CFO Says No Bankruptcy Plans Amid Debt Crisis
JetBlue Airways faces mounting financial pressure with $8.4 billion in debt and six consecutive years of operating losses, yet its executives have firmly rejected bankruptcy plans to employees.
The airline reported a net loss of $257 million in the third quarter due to soaring jet fuel prices that averaged $3.91 per gallon. Creditors holding about $2 billion in notes are currently receiving roughly 42 cents on the dollar, and major rating agencies have downgraded JetBlue's credit status into junk territory.
Despite these challenges, Chief Financial Officer Ursula Hurley stated during a companywide call that JetBlue has significant cash reserves and is financially stable. CEO Joanna Geraghty reiterated in an April memo to staff that the airline was not considering bankruptcy in 2026 or engaging in debt restructuring discussions with creditors.
While shares hit record lows earlier this month, management maintains it remains on track to achieve sustained operating profitability by 2027.
