Federal Judge Nitza I. Quiñones Alejandro sentenced Jalen Smith, a former basketball trainer and one of two organizers of an NCAA point-shaving scheme, to six years in prison on Tuesday for recruiting college players to underperform games so professional gamblers could win large wagers against them. During the hearing, Smith apologized for his actions driven by the prospect of easy money but acknowledged they were wrong. He had pleaded guilty earlier this year to bribery and wire fraud charges alongside illegally possessing a handgun found in his home during an unrelated search warrant execution.
