Jacksonville expands cold weather shelters as temperatures threaten record lows

Jacksonville authorities have extended shelter services amid a forecast of record low temperatures this weekend. The Legends Center on Soutel Drive is operating overnight from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. until February 2, offering refuge to those in need, with free JTA bus transportation and security presence. Community shelters, including the City Rescue Mission, Sulzbacher Center, and Trinity Rescue Mission, are also prepared to accommodate increased demand. In neighboring counties like St. Johns, Nassau, Bradford, Putnam, Flagler, Camden, and Ware, additional shelters are opening, with specific operational hours and guidelines. For example, Nassau County’s shelters operate from 6 p.m. to 9 a.m., and the Bradford County Sheriff's Office is hosting a warming center in its lobby. The region is bracing for extreme cold, with a deep freeze expected tonight, prompting widespread preparations across Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia to prevent cold-related injuries and ensure the safety of vulnerable populations.
