The New Jersey Devils defeated the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 after a shootout on Tuesday, with Jack Hughes scoring two goals to lead his team's offensive effort. The victory marked Philadelphia goaltender Sam Hellebuyck's home debut against Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl in front of their own fans.

Hughes contributed significantly throughout the game, including a goal that set up Ryan Brown's power-play scorer at 7:42 of the second period by chipping loose ice on his rebound. Evan Bouchard opened scoring with an eight-minute slap shot from the top left circle in the first frame, while Jesper Bratt added another shootout point alongside McDavid.

Edmonton managed to keep their season-opening points streak alive despite losing for the first time at home this year (7-0-1). The Oilers' offense led by 31 assists and a sixteen-game scoring-and-assisting streak was not enough against Devils play that featured strong pressure in front of Tristan Jarry. Coach Mike Babcock admitted his team struggled with turnovers during the second period, though they secured points in their last five games overall.

The game concluded when Hellebuyck stopped Kasperi Kapanen to seal a win for New Jersey after Arseny Gritsyuk scored on Edmonton's final attempt.
