Hurricane Polo Intensifies to Category 1 Amid El Niño Surge

Tropical Storm Polo has rapidly intensified into a Category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 80 mph, located approximately 270 miles southwest of Mexico's coast. The National Hurricane Center forecasts the system will continue strengthening and could become a major hurricane within days. This development occurs against the backdrop of an actively strengthening El Niño event that has generated 18 named storms across both Pacific basins this season with over two months remaining in the hurricane period. While Polo is moving eastward at five mph, its moisture is already streaming into the U.S. Southwest to enhance monsoon thunderstorms and flood threats beginning Tuesday. Although no direct landfall near American territory is expected, remnants of Tropical Depression Fifteen-E are anticipated to redevelop and bring heavy rain to Hawaii.
