Humpback whale slams into boat off Long Island

1K

Steven Heid and two companions had a dramatic encounter with a massive humpback whale near Moriches Inlet on the East End of Long Island. While fishing, they spotted the colossal mammal swimming nearby about three hundred yards from their vessel. To avoid harming it with the propeller, Heid shut off the engine before filming began by his nephew Oliver Samter. The whale then launched itself out of the water and collided directly with the boat's hatch, causing small fish to flee in fear. Heid described the impact as feeling like a freight train hitting the ship. Although the collision was intense, both the vessel and the animal remained unharmed after the creature swam away.
