Guatemala Drought Destroys Crops and Forces Farmers to Survival

A severe agricultural drought has devastated eastern Guatemala, destroying crops like beans for farmers such as Felícito Marroquín who lost over 15,000 quetzales on their harvest. The crisis affects a total of 226,773 hectares in the country by August 27, surpassing the worst recorded losses from the previous decade which occurred in 2018 following volcanic activity and dry spells. Approximately 96% of the national agricultural damage is attributed to lack of rainfall while millions of people living in arid regions face food insecurity as water levels drop below historical records.
