Sean Payton Hails Evan Engram as Key Tight End

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton expressed strong satisfaction with the early-season performance of tight end Evan Engram and rookie Nate Adkins. While last year's group struggled to produce big plays, this team opted not to make major free agent additions at the position. Despite underperforming in his previous season—catching 50 passes for only one touchdown—Engram has shown significant improvement during the first two games of the 2026 campaign. In those initial contests, he caught five of six targets for a total of 60 yards and a rushing touchdown by rookie Jonah Coleman three plays later.

Payton noted that Engram is executing well in both the passing game and blocking duties, specifically praising his ability to provide protection threats during runs. The coach highlighted Engram's dedicated offseason work and training camp efforts which have translated into increased offensive involvement compared to prior years. Although tight end production fluctuates weekly due to target distribution between Jaylen Waddle and Courtland Sutton, Payton remains excited about the veteran's development in his second year with the organization.
