UEFA Fines Crystal Palace €10,000 After Europa League Demotion and Fan Protests

Crystal Palace has faced multiple sanctions from UEFA following their demotion from the Europa League to the Conference League due to breaches of multi-club ownership rules. The club qualified for the Europa League by winning the FA Cup but was disqualified after UEFA ruled that their majority owner, Eagle Football, conflicted with regulations because of their stake in French club Lyon. The decision was upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, and Nottingham Forest replaced Palace in the Europa League. Despite the demotion, Palace fans protested by displaying a banner reading 'UEFA MAFIA' featuring the UEFA logo with a Euro symbol, at several matches including the Community Shield, Premier League opener, and Conference League qualifiers. UEFA responded by fining Palace €10,000 (£8,670) for bringing the organization into disrepute and transmitting messages unfit for sports events. UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin has publicly admitted that UEFA often pretends some clubs are innocent regarding multi-club ownership, fueling fan frustrations and protests. The banner and chants against UEFA highlight ongoing tensions over governance and transparency. Palace's owner, John Textor, sold his stake in the club following the controversy. Despite the sanctions, Palace supporters remain defiant, continuing to voice their opposition to UEFA's decisions. The club's campaign in the Conference League includes matches against Dynamo Kiev, AEK Larnaca, AZ Alkmaar, and others, with fans likely to continue their protests.
