According to the Platte County Sheriff's Office, Platte County Prosecutor Eric Zahnd passed away on Thursday. A lifelong resident of the role since his election in 2002, he had previously announced plans not to seek re-election earlier this year.

State Sen. Tony Luetkemeyer, who will succeed him as prosecutor, described Zahnd's death as devastating and noted that Zahnd helped make everyone safer during his tenure. He called the former prosecutor a mentor to countless young lawyers and prosecutors whose work ensures his legacy lives on.

Other Kansas City-area officials offered condolences. Clay County Prosecutor Zachary Thompason praised Zahnd for serving with grit and integrity, while Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson highlighted their collaborative fight against retail theft across county lines. Mayor Quinton Lucas of Kansas City extended prayers to the family, friends, colleagues, and those who loved him.

Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe stated that the loss will be felt throughout the entire state.
