Uber Ordered To Pay $40M For Emily Normandin-Parker Death

A California court ordered Uber to pay $40 million to the parents of Emily Normandin-Parker, a UCLA graduate who was fatally struck on an Orange County freeway after her rideshare driver abandoned them there. The arbitration panel found that driver Vu Tran pulled over at an unsafe gore point in August 2023 following a dispute with his passengers and demanded payment for cleaning fees before kicking the women out of their vehicle. Norman-Parker, who was intoxicated along with her friend Luna Moore, entered the freeway while arguing with Tran and was hit by another car; Tran allegedly drove past her body without calling emergency services to demand compensation from Uber instead. Retired Judge Richard Stone concluded that the company is responsible for its driver's conduct despite Uber not accepting full responsibility during legal proceedings.
