Congresswoman Grijalva Claims Pepper Spray During Tucson ICE Raid Amid Dispute

Rep. Adelita Grijalva, a Democrat from Arizona, reports that she was pepper sprayed and pushed by ICE agents during a raid at a Tucson restaurant. She stated she approached the scene to gather information and was sprayed in the face by an aggressive agent while asking for clarification. Grijalva emphasized her status as a member of Congress and her right to inquire peacefully. The Department of Homeland Security denied her account, asserting she was near a person who was pepper sprayed while obstructing law enforcement. Tucson police confirmed that federal agents used chemical munitions during a raid at Taco Giro, where approximately 40 ICE agents, many masked, had gathered. Tucson Mayor Regina Romero and Vice Mayor Lane Santa Cruz condemned the use of force, citing escalation and disproportionate tactics. Grijalva criticized the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement, alleging lack of due process and the disappearance of individuals from streets. The incident occurred shortly after her swearing-in following her election to succeed her late father, Rep. Raul Grijalva. The controversy highlights tensions over immigration raids and law enforcement conduct in border communities.
