Police confirmed that two people died after a suspected drunk driver struck approximately 30 bicyclists on a self-coordinated Halloween ride near Kingsley Street and Tudor Avenue in Montclair, California. The incident occurred around 10:40 p.m. Saturday when the suspect plowed into riders traveling eastbound on Kingsley Street while heading westbound in a 2021 Honda Accord. Witnesses stated that one victim was dragged for over a mile before being left near a residential neighborhood; another died at the scene, and a third succumbed to injuries hours later after arriving at the hospital. A fourth cyclist sustained minor head lacerations but declined further treatment against medical advice.

Valentin Alberto Rodriguez, 38, of Montclair, was arrested just hours after fleeing the crash on suspicion of driving under the influence, felony hit-and-run, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, and other charges. Investigators determined that the group ride was not sponsored or affiliated with city authorities but organized independently by participants.

Neighbors reported hearing a loud thud followed by cries for help as they grieved over the loss of innocent lives during what appeared to be an evening recreational activity.
