Urban Meyer Warns Notre Dame Playoff Hinges On Miami Game
Former Ohio State and Florida head coach Urban Meyer has issued a stern warning to the University of Notre Dame regarding their upcoming matchup against No. 1 ranked Miami Hurricanes, stating that the Fighting Irish's chances in the College Football Playoffs depend entirely on this contest.
Meyer appeared on The Triple Option podcast to discuss his assessment of the playoff landscape. He emphasized that if Notre Dame loses to Miami, he believes they do not deserve a spot in the postseason tournament.
Notre Dame remains an independent program with one of the most criticized schedules in college football history. Kirk Herbstreit described their current schedule as "an embarrassment and incredibly unfair," noting that the Irish faced only two significant challenges this season: losses to BYU, which included controversial officiating errors, and Miami. Pete Bevacqua, Notre Dame's athletic director, has defended the team by pointing out a contractual agreement with the College Football Playoff organization. This deal guarantees Notre Dame a berth in the tournament if they finish within the top 12 of final rankings. Some media outlets have criticized this arrangement as "cheating college football." Despite these criticisms and recent losses, Meyer still ranks Notre Dame fourth among his projected top eight teams for the first playoff rankings.
Meyer listed Miami at No. 1, Georgia at No. 2, Utah at No. 3, followed by Notre Dame at four. He also placed Alabama fifth, LSU sixth, BYU seventh, and Ohio State eighth. While Meyer acknowledges that one more loss would be unfortunate for the Irish program, he maintains a high regard for their current standing.
The upcoming game on Saturday represents a pivotal moment in determining whether the Fighting Irish can secure their place among the elite teams competing for the national championship.
