Boston Globe Welcomes Back Former Editor Brian McGrory as New Editor, Nancy Barnes to Step Down

The Boston Globe announced the return of Brian McGrory as its new editor, succeeding Nancy Barnes who will step down after nearly three years in the role. McGrory, who previously served as Globe editor from 2012 to early 2023, will start his new role on January 5 and is returning in a permanent capacity. Barnes, the first woman to lead the Globe and a former NPR executive, will remain with the organization as an editor-at-large and focus on fundraising initiatives. During her tenure, Barnes led the newsroom through significant investigative journalism, including Pulitzer Prize finalist work on the Steward Health Care crisis, and expanded regional coverage despite challenges faced by the industry. McGrory, with 34 years at the Globe and a background in academia and nonprofit news, is known for leading the Globe to win three Pulitzer Prizes, including for coverage of the Boston Marathon bombing. He has also contributed to the Baltimore Banner’s rise as a major news source in Baltimore. The leadership change reflects the Globe’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its journalistic impact and community engagement amid a changing media landscape.
