Indiana Coach Curt Cignetti Wins Second Walter Camp Award; Mendoza, Smith, Ponds Earn All-American Honors

Indiana football coach Curt Cignetti has been named the Walter Camp National Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year, making history as the first coach to win this award back-to-back in its 59-year history. Under his leadership, Indiana achieved its first undefeated regular season in program history with a 13-0 record, secured the Big Ten Championship, and earned the No. 1 seed in the upcoming College Football Playoff, where they will face the winner of Alabama versus Oklahoma in the Rose Bowl on January 1, 2026. Quarterback Fernando Mendoza received multiple prestigious awards, including the Heisman Trophy, Davey O’Brien Award, and Maxwell Award, becoming the first Indiana player to win the Heisman. Mendoza led the nation with 33 passing touchdowns and had a remarkable season with at least five games of four or more touchdown passes and zero interceptions. His performance has made him a strong favorite for the Heisman Trophy, which will be awarded soon. Additionally, four Big Ten players, including Mendoza and Ohio State's Caleb Downs, were named to the AP All-America first team. Mendoza's success has also marked a historic milestone for Indiana, as he is the first Hoosier to win the Heisman Trophy. The AP All-America team features players from 18 schools, with Ohio State and Notre Dame leading the representation. Cignetti's coaching achievements and Mendoza's standout season highlight Indiana's impressive rise in college football, with the team now poised for a national title run. The awards and honors underscore the significant impact of Indiana's program this season.
