Blue Jays distance themselves from Anthony Santander's anti-Islam posts
The Toronto Blue Jays released an official statement distancing the organization from a series of Instagram reels posted by outfielder Anthony Santander that expressed anti-Muslim sentiments following recent U.S. midterm elections.
Santander, who was born and raised in Venezuela before his MLB career began with Cleveland, shared two videos on his social media stories around the time Democrats gained control of Congress. The first reel featured a Christian minister claiming there is 'no such thing as kind Muslims.' The second video focused on Michigan Senator-elect Abdulrahim El-Sayed, arguing that good Muslims support Sharia law over American law.
Both posts have since been removed from Santander's Instagram story. When approached by CTV News Toronto regarding the controversy, the Blue Jays issued a statement emphasizing inclusivity and stating that individual comments do not reflect organizational values. The club did issue an apology or disciplinary action against Santander during this incident.
